Daniel: Phenomenal adaptation of E. L. Doctorow’s The Novel of Daniel, in reference to the kids of a few sequenced after Julius and Ethel Rosenberg who should encounter their hurtful heritage in order to handle their own lives in the difficult 1960s. Not without its imperfections, however overall a seductive and incredibly well-made film. Cast includes Timothy Hullon, Mandy Patinkin, Lindsay Crouse, Edward Asner, Ellen Barkin, Julie Bovasso, Tovah Feldshuh, Joseph Leon, Amanda Plummer, and John Rubinstein. (130 minutes, 1983)
Sidewalks of New York: A light hearted comedy in regards to lhe romantic entanglements of a group of New Yorkers. The film has an unmistakable Woody Allen-ish feel, although Burns’ script is no match for Allen. Cast includes Edward Bums, Rosario Dawson, Heather Graham, Stanley Tucci, David Krumholtz, Dennis Farina, Brittany Murphy, Callie Thome, and Aida Turturro. (107 minutes, 2001)
Richard the Third: An elaborate rendition of Shakespeare’s journal of an ambitious 15th-century British baron and his court captivates. Cast includes Laurence Olivier, John Gielgud, Ralph Richardson, Claire Bloom, Alec Clunes, Cedric Hardwicke, Stanley Baker, and Pamela Brown. (155 minutes, 1955)
The Front Page: Third filming of the Hecht-MacArthur play about crazy and woolly Chicago newspaperman in the 1920s has barely anything new to offer (with the exception of 4-letter words) although continues to be an entertaining piece of work. Cast includes Jack Lenunon, Walter Matthau, Carol Burnett, Susan Sarandon, Vincent Gardenia, David Wayne, Allen Garfield, Austin Pendleton, and Charles Duming. (105 minutes, 1974)
The Inkwell: A sixteen-year-old, whose toy doll confidante naturally frets his parents, comprehends in regards to love, in this summer of ’76 reminiscence piece set in a black zone of Martha’s Vineyard. Cast includes Larenz Tate, Joe Morton, Suzzanne Douglas, Glynn Turman, Vanessa Bell Calloway, Adrienne-Joi Johnson, Morris Chestnut, Jada Pinkett, Duane Matlin, Mary Alice, and Phyllis Yvonne Stickney. (110 minutes, 1994)
Heart like a Wheel: Well-made although curiously uninspiring bio of race-car driver Shirley each other and much discussion is unintelligible to American ears (albeit if you might make it through the first reel, hang on). Cast includes Bonnie Bedelia, Leo Rossi, Hoyt Axton, Bill McKinney, Anthony Edwards, Dean Paul Martin, Paul Bartel, Dick Miller, and Terence Knox. (113 minutes, 1983)
The Slave: Interminable Italian spectacle. Child of Spartacus comprehends tale of his dad and promises retribution. The excellent photography is the only positive holding. Cast includes Steve Reeves, Jacques Semas, Gianna Maria Canale, and Claudio Gora. (102 minutes, 1963)
Fantomas against Scotland Yard: Sarcastic cliffhanger-type venture story, with Marais as wonderful felon involved in sports orientated adventures. Cast includes Jean Marais, Louis De Funes, Mylene Demongeot, and Henri Serre. (104 minutes, 1966)
The Bullfighters: One of more superior Laural and Hardy later works, engaging false identity as Stan is a lookalike for renowned matador. Things really get funny when Stan is thrown in with the bull. Cast includes Stan Laurel, Oliver Hardy, Margo Woode, Richard Aisle, and Carol Andrews. (61 minutes, 1945)
