Filed under: Entertainment — Tags: , , , , , , — Siskel Hammerstein @ 12:26 am April 11, 2010

Every once in a while a movie comes along that makes you wonder what in the world they were thinking when they decided to put this movie together. The action is so off the wall, the story line is so ludicrously outrageous, and the fight scenes so incredibly over the top that you have to wonder if it is some kind of joke. But when a movie like this pulls of two hours of fantastic entertainment, then it’s all worth it. “Crank: High Voltage,” starring Jason Statham is such a movie. One you absolutely cannot miss.

Our mythological chronicle starts out with the hero being thrown out of a helicopter. The colossal clunk he makes on the earth makes the evening news, of course, but not sooner than his body is scooped up and taken away in a van overflowing with dubious characters. Next thing we know, our hero is lying in a make shift hospice, and being operated on by a physician with a cigarette hanging out of his lips.

He wakes up, and uncovers that his heart has been replaced by a mechanical heart. We find out that our central character has an extraordinarily muscular heart, and it has been stolen to be entrenched into the leader of a acknowledged criminal posse somewhere in Southern California. So our protagonist has to not only find his unique heart, but he also has to find someone to replace it out with the electrical one that has been fixed into him.

There’s only one problem. His electrical, transient heart runs off of an exterior battery that gets smashed somehow. So he must continuously give himself electrical shocks to keep his short-term heart from giving out on him. This makes for an appealing chase across the wilderness of southern California, as he battles gangsters from all walks of life.

All the way through the entire journey to find his initial heart, he is in unvarying contact with a pal of his, who happens to be a skilled open heart medical doctor, although we learn he has had his medicinal license taken away due to some regrettable accident that unfolded with an ex girlfriend of his. But nevertheless, we trust that once our hero locates his first heart, his friend will be able to swap it out with the false one.

We have the decisive fight, which includes our central character, two adversary gangs, and a gangster’s head that is being kept energetic in jar. In a last ditch effort to charge his heart one last time, our hero climbs up an electrical pole and zaps himself one last time. But the electrical shock proves to be a bit too stout, and he is engulfed in combustion. Meanwhile, his accomplice productively finds his unique heart, and his pal, the dishonored heart surgeon, attempts to restore him to health. Will he succeed? The only way to find out is to hire this remarkable DVD, before it’s too late.

Movie Examination: The Godfather – Must See Show

Filed under: Entertainment — Tags: , , , , , , — Siskel Hammerstein @ 1:06 am March 29, 2010

There is nothing like a movie that is layered so deep and tells so many stories, and that is filled with so much fantastic acting, that you can see it again and again, and never grow tired of it. “The Godfather,” based on the best selling novel by Mario Puzo, is such a movie. This epic tale tells the story of an American family empire and the man who slowly rises to take the reigns.

The film commences with a sizeable wedding ceremony. This does lots of things. It shows the force and reach of Don Corleone, the patriarch of the family. It shows us all the diverse characters, most significantly his sons. As we see that the Don is getting on in age, it will become significant to see who succeeds him. We meet his youngest son, Michael, who has just come back from the War in Europe. He is telling his youthful wife that he has no plans to go into the family partnership.

His wish, is of course valued but the other family members. As the picture progresses, we find that there are other, eminent and commanding families that are challenging for business. And the business that is rising immediately is the drug business. One thing that Don Corleone vows to do is to never enter the drug business. It has always been his desire, it seems, to have his son take over a rightful business, and not a criminal endeavor. Drug would be in the opposite direction.

But since Don Corleone is very authoritative, his rejection to enter into the narcotics trade angers his rivals. This sets off a drug war, and there is an attempt made on the Don’s life. The family gets together, and decides what to do. They killer must be killed, and Michael Corleone is just the man to do it. His fidelity has shifted from that of a law abiding citizen, to that of his family, irrespective of their association to the law.

After killing the killer, Michael has to escape the country. He stays in Italy for a few years, where he falls in love and gets married. The far scope of his father’s enemy find him, and kills his wife with a bomb that was destined for him. Any hint of allegiance to the law is vanished in young Michael. His allegiance now is completely to his family.

When he returns home, he spends many hours sitting at his fathers side, listening to how to run his business. In yet an additional disaster, his older brother, Sonny, is gunned down by enemy gangs. It is becoming increasingly clear that not only does he need to throw his loyalties entirely with the Corleone family, but he must become more heartless than his enemies in order to survive. And cruel he does become. In one of the most exceedingly commended climactic scenes ever, Michael Corleone accurately becomes the new Godfather, as the scenes of his nephews baptism is skillfully juxtaposed with all his rivals being viciously ruined. “The Godfather” is a movie not to be missed.
