Ants are seen all over the world, from the hottest deserts to the lush green rainforests. We can find them in our houses, in our lawns, & even in our workplaces. They live in colonies, and a single colony may have over a million ants. There are many different types of ants. Some of the better-known kinds are the fire ants, army ants, driver ants, weaver ants, silver ants, honeypot ants, bulldog ants, and leafcutter ants. Colonies of ants are comprised of three classes of ants, namely the workers, the soldiers, & the single queen.

Ants are 1 of the most common creatures in the world & are of different types. Regardless of their tiny They are small but terrible; they could pose a threat to humans as well as animals.

The behavior of ants may vary depending on their class. Ants’ color may vary from brown to black or red and their size range from two to 25 millimeters.

Driver ants and army ants are highly evolved ants. Army ants are seen in South America and driver ants are found in Africa. Unlike other species, they do not have permanent nests. Their colonies reproduce via two methods – fission or nuptial flights.

Weaver ants, on the other hand, are those that build their nests in trees by putting leaves together. These creatures first pull the leaves together with a bridge of workers & then they sew the leaves by pressing silk producing larvae on the leaves.

Ants with generally have enlarged bellies are called honeypot ants. These ants are typically found in hot, dry places such as deserts in Australia, Africa & North America. They are also considered a great delicacy in some places.

Leafcutter ants live only within their colony and feed only on fungus. They come in different sized castes to perform various duties that are to be executed in the colony.

Ants that have a sac of poison are known as the fire ant. Their “poison” is known as piperidine alkaloids.

Lastly, one of the biggest and most primitive varieties of ants are the Australian bulldog ants. They have only one chromosome.

No one wants termite infestations, but alas everyone is at risk for them. Termites do not discriminate-they invade any house. Some may consider a termite infestation is just irritating, but they can do more harm than you may know. They are a vital part of our ecosystem, but in our dwellings they are devastating. If you do not know the early signs of termites, they can destroy your property, even your entire home.

It is rather unfortunate that homeowners don’t even know they have termites, not until a lot of harm has been done. Knowing at least the early signs of termite attacks can help save your home before the problem begins or worsens. Termites can do a lot of harm to an area in a small time period. Therefore, knowing what to look for would probably help you stop termites before they can cause insurmountable harm.

You should know that not all termite attacks can be seen by the untrained eye. Detecting these wood eating creatures may take a little more time and a more trained eye. You can find them living and feeding off your furniture, floors, walls and other areas of the home that is made of wood. checking for mud holes & feces piles can help determine if you have termites.

Inspect areas where termites normally would go, to see if there are any signs of infestation at all. Check outside, in the garden and lawn area; dead leaves, tree stumps & mud holes in the soil. Also check if your walls have cracks or spaces, because they could be a termite’s entryway into your walls. Window sills, basement walls, moldings, and doorframes are also some places to check.

If any show signs of feeding activity, you should call a professional exterminator or pest control company. You can even do it yourself if you have knowledge & equipment. The main thing here is to detect the problem before serious troubles arise.

Important Information About Mosquito-Transmitted Diseases

Filed under: Twitter Layouts — Tags: , , , , , , , , , — Steve Bray @ 1:52 pm December 20, 2009

If you spend a lot of time outdoors, you should be aware that pesky mosquitoes can bring an array of viral diseases that could be deadly.

Although most people have already heard about the correlation between mosquitoes & West Nile virus, there are many other diseases mosquitoes carry that the general population does not know about. Unfortunately, if the news does not report a person contracting a mosquito carried disease, most people wouldn’t even know the existence of these diseases at all. Mosquitoes are one of the dirtiest and deadliest pests known to man.

Some of the viral diseases mosquitoes can transmit include the following: – dengue fever – epidemic polyarthritis – Japanese encephalitis – LaCross encephalitis – Rift Valley fever – Ross River Fever – St. Louis encephalitis – West Nile virus – yellow fever

These are just a few of the numerous other types of diseases mosquitoes can carry. Mosquitoes are also the sole cause of malaria, the world’s leading cause of premature death.

The mosquito genus Anopheles cause over 5.3 million deaths to occur each year. They are the mosquitoes that carry the malaria virus. Children under the age of five make up most of these fatalities.

Nearly all mosquitoes are capable of carrying the filariasis worm, the cause of the disease elephantitis. About 40 million people the world over are currently dealing with some form of this disease.

Even though these facts seem terrible, they are not the most terrifying part of the mosquito problem. As people grow older, mosquito bites are often undetected. In children, mosquito bites often cause their skin to swell up and turn red. In adults, however, they tend to build resistance to these bites.

True, some types of mosquito types can’t be rid of; the mosquitoes can be warded off or repelled using simple mosquito repellants and nets. Keep these creatures away from your body and stay healthy, to prevent catching diseases from these dreaded insects.
